What do 1994 and 2009 have in common?
They are the two years where American’s judgment that the Democrat party was “too liberal” peaked. 50% of Gallup respondents said the Dems were “too liberal” right after their being demolished in the 1994 mid-term elections, having elected a charismatic, young, smooth talking president who they said would destroy Republicans forever. The number of respondents judging Dems “too liberal” jumped back up to 46% in the most recent Gallup poll.
Most major demographic and attitudinal subgroups show at least a slight uptick since 2008 in perceptions that the Democratic Party is too liberal. The increasing perception of the Democrats as too far left comes as President Obama and the Democrats in Congress have expanded the government’s role in the economy to address the economic problems facing the country. Additionally, the government is working toward major healthcare reform legislation and strengthening environmental regulations.
Why? Well, probably because the One has really started waving his change stick around in ways that normal Americans think are a little too Nancy Pelosi. Imagine what a hole they are about to dig now that they added one more crazy to the rolls in the Senate, have their magic sixty number and think they can do whatever they want. Not to mention that all of their crazies are barking for more crazy stuff. Hopefully all of their shenanigans will be followed quickly by even more encouraging polls. The Republicans could still use some improvement in their own polls, still trailing the Dems in the “about right” category.
But the Democratic Party still compares favorably to the Republican Party from the standpoint that more Americans say the Democrats’ ideology is “about right” (42%) than say this about the Republicans’ ideology (34%).
That’s ok. What else is the same in these two years? This guy. And some other neat folks too.
